NGF Staff Calendar App

Project Overview

In Spring of 2026 at Georgia Gwinnett College in Dr. Anca Doloc-Mihu’s Software Development II course, we were tasked with banding together as a group to work on a semester-long project. The task was to partner with a local 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in the education space, whose mission was to expand after-school and summer academic programs and access to children in the metro Atlanta area. They expressed a need for their contributors (teachers, parapros, staff, and others) to be able to access a centralized calendar through which to schedule their availability to lead classes, tutoring, and other activities. In addition, there would be a necessity for an admin to be able to view, manipulate, edit, and manage this calendar. Over the course of the semester, as Project Manager, I led our group, Team Andromeda (comprised of myself, Collins Eghaghe, and Yonas Wondafrash, pictured) in the creation of this app component. After four months of work, our app component was deployed directly into production, and is in active use by the staff of this organization today. I led our group’s presentation at the 2026 Georgia Gwinnett College’s CREATES event, where along with our classmates, we presented our work to an audience of over 500.

Project Work and Management

Our group employed Agile methodology as our project management philosophy. As a class, we would engage in twice-weekly Scrum standups led by the professor and Scrum Master, in which we would discuss what our group had worked on, the progress we had made, and if any roadblocks existed. As Project Manager, I led the charge on administration of the group’s Jira workflow management, including managing user stories and tasks, as well as generating burndown and velocity charts for each of three sprints. I also hosted an in-service for the group to introduce them to navigating Jira, as well as some administrative best practices with which to keep our workflow documentation clean and well-managed. I was also responsible for creation of all documentation, including in-app code documentation, user documentation, project documents such as presentations, and the final report. I engaged the client to schedule stakeholder meetings to discuss each sprint’s progress in development of the deliverable, and was directly involved in the final integration and deployment into production of our app for active use by the clients.

Project Specifications

Our project deliverable was built to be a component deployed inside an existing app infrastructure, built upon the MERN stack. The app employed MongoDB for backend and database requirements. At the first iteration, our deliverable was a basic calendar, constructed using a Bootstrap component. Over the second iteration, we were able to integrate backend access to the existing MongoDB database infrastructure, which we confirmed through the use of MongoDB compass to ensure the required information was being successfully passed between the calendar and the database. In the third iteration, we integrated task management, the calendar’s admin view and management capabilities, and successfully completed the scope of our work.
